Now at 2-1, my next opponent was Shawn (?) from Tulsa. The scenario agreed upon was OPT 1.1, at the Coastal Fortress website, "Hungarian Manors". It seemed interesting, and may not be a good tourney scenario, but I asked for it. Another half bd 41 scenario with variable entry of each sides reinforcement groups. Basically you roll for the reinf group. The Russian reinf groups were fairly balanced inf - armor groups. The Russian groups were inf (although one group had FTs and DCs) with different T34s. The Germans had 3 possible groups, one SS INF on trucks, one SS INF with a Hummel, the other a MkIVj , a Stug IIIL and some 467 infantry. It's Dec 44, and the Russians need to control overlay bldgs X16 and X23 at gme end. These 3 level bldgs are setup on the level 1 hexes of BB2/CC3 and AA8/Z7 respectively. Jim Burris recommended it, and fighting in 3 level bldgs seemed interesting. SO, I pushed for it with my next opponent. Rolling for sides, I got the Germans. Once again the bridge over the stream was crucial. The stream was deep and frigid. The Russians could not double time and their AFVs had Red MPs. Germans could HIP 2 sqd equivalents w smc and SWs on setup. Shawn played his Russians well, advancing cautiously. His best move was definitely to try to interdict the bridge with his armor. He VBMed around the streams' bldgs and used his first turn reinforcements to creep towards the bridge. My only AT gun (76L) was setup to cover the left flank hexrow, perhaps a bad choice. Although a PF finally blazed his first T34 blocking the bridge, infantry and another T34 helped block the way of my reinforcements. By Tn4 the Germans were desperate to get around his blocking fire, and were crossing the frigid stream (548s became 447s). I needed the Stg IIIL and MkIV group, but never got them. I resigned after turn 4. The Manors were in Russian hands en masse. I guess this scenario depends on the needs of the player at the time. Another player said he did not need the AFVs and was happy with the early entry of the SS Infantry. This was perhaps too luck dependent for a tourney scenario, but I asked for it. Ger loss. I was 2-2. Sunday morning saw the finals. For the championship, Wes Vaughn and Paul Sidhu played "Silesian Interlude". I was playing Jim D. in "Halha River Bridge". My first playing of this one, but a favorite historical area of mine. Jim agreed. Rolling for sides, I got the Japanese. Jim setup primarily around the bridge except for the MMG and 37IG setup to the north, across the river. A wire line covered his southern flank, close to his FHs near the bridge. I figured a rapid Jap advance was necessary. On my 2nd tn, a large group w the 9-1 ldr did a banzai/platoon move/ armored assault from the center, between the dunes. One sqd got under his wire while his accompaning Ha-Go bogged on the wire, after 3 VCA changes to attempt removing the wire. Sleezy perhaps, yea but by the ASLRB! With most of his units first fired, another Banzai (w 10-2) came from the southern sand dune and reached his wire line. During Adv Phase the 10-2 joined 3 sqds in a one hex FG w LMGs, ready to blast the remaining Russians from behind the wire. Poor Jim malfed his 37 IG early. The MMG was fairly ineffective and malfed by Tn5. His 8-1 ldr did BH, but then went berserk. He met a quick death during his charge. Leaderless around the bridge, it was easy to cross and DM the remaining Russians. I almost blew it by placing WP smk grenades on the bridge, with my stack, thinking the WP NMC would only effect enemy units (wrong). This was to get a flame on the bridge. Ended up setting the DC w the 10-2 ldr helping, and the blowing the bridge. Jap win. Ended up 3-2 and had a blast! It was certainly dissapointing that more ASLers did not show up. Especially some of those Chi-town or KC boys! Shawn came from Tulsa, an admirable feat of driving. Some classic players like Randi Rossi and Dave Angrisani were there too to add to the fun. The best quote from the tourney had to be from a 10 yr old that ventured in to see what was happening. In a game between Randi Rossi and Dave Angrisani, he said, "You two are acting like 3 year olds!" Ah! To be a 3 year old again! 8-)) Joe Paul Sidhu took the championship (this guy worked his way up and is a serious champion, besides a really fanatic of the "Great Game"). Wes Vaughn was second and Doug Kirk was 3rd (after playing my ASL FtF buddy William Sanders). _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
